FLORIDA SOUTHERN
COLLEGE - PUBLIX CHARITIES COMMONS RESIDENCE HALLS
Lakeland, Florida |
|

|
| Site
A one block area in the college's residential sector,
bordering one of the City's residential districts. Florida
Southern College boasts the largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright
structures at one location in the world. |
|
|
 |
| Program
Construct three residence halls to replace older units built in the
1940's. Programmatic requirements included creating a
community of 250 students out of disparate student groups of
fraternal organizations, sororities and independent students, as
well as addressing control issues related to security and separation
of male and female students. |
|
|
 |
| Solution
The buildings are organized around an inner courtyard which
serves as a recreational and social space. The interior space
planning utilized the "suite" concept for student living, with
several multi-purpose meeting rooms for use as chapter rooms,
recreation, and social spaces, |

well as living quarters for a Resident Advisor. Exterior
relationships to the celebrated Frank Lloyd Wright buildings were
maintained by the use of color, textural and architectural elements
such as brick banding, stucco walls, deep roof overhangs and sun
shade trellises. |
