SUN N' FUN, SPORT
AVIATION MUSEUM
Lakeland, Florida |
|

|
| Site
The outdoor pavilion will be phase one of a four phase
museum and education complex. The site is densley treed in the
north and west, and has an existing temporary museum building to the
east. The new pavilion was designed to be the southernmost
anchor to the "education corridor", terminating at the FAA education
facility to the north. |
|
|
 |
| Program
The pavilion is to be used for museum and community education
seminars to promote science in general, and aviation in particular.
The project's purpose is to expand the organization's ability to
educate with regard to air safety and aviation heritage.
Aesthetically, the pavilion needed to have a strong visual presence,
different from the pre-fab metal buildings of the
existing structures. The facility should accommodate speaker
presentations, demonstrations, concerts, lectures, covered dining
and exhibit areas. |

|
 |
| Solution
Sloping steel columns tether the large "wing" of the
pavilion roof to the ground. The tapered edge visually
lifts the roof structure while reinforcing the image of flight.
The crossing pattern of the steel columns recall the struts of early
planes. The wing as a design concept, was simple yet
appropriate for this aviation museum. |
