Ross Norton Recreation Complex
The Ross Norton Recreation Complex in Clearwater, FL is a recreation facility that includes a teen center, a 10,000 square foot gymnasium, fitness room, catering kitchen, a 4,000 square foot multi-purpose room and a boxing area.
The exterior includes a climbing wall, skate park and an 18,700 square foot inline skate outdoor hockey rink. The site is also designed for water features, pavilions and other auxiliary buildings.
The City of Clearwater Parks and Recreation Department required a building that could accommodate many diverse activities, such as skating, fitness and swimming, and be accessible to visitors of all ages. The areas had to be designed to be accessible to each other, but spaced out enough to allow for sufficient space for each activity. Elements of the previous site, including the pool and bathhouse remained to keep the project cost effective. The pool was renovated with a new deck, fencing, planters and a plunge pool with a slide and tot pool area.
Staffing requirements for the building are minimal, yet creating a safe play environment was necessary. A centrally placed control desk provided visual contact with all area access points including the pool and skate park. The skate park also required an outside operator in the pro shop that can oversee other areas of the complex as well.
The building’s circulation is organized around a north south lobby with full glass walls at each end to visually link the pool and lake. The building’s form radiates on both horizontal and vertical planes from this central points. The forms are intended to evoke a sense of energy, motion and activity.

The Lunz Group understood the importance of our values and integrated that into the design of the building. They have been very supportive during the implementation including making real-time adjustments within our budget and time constraints. I would highly recommend The Lunz Group for the excellent work they have done in achieving our dream.Dr. Michael Nastanski
